Warwickshire sits in the heart of England — which means our gardens face a range of conditions. Hot spells in summer, cold wet winters, and clay-heavy soils in many areas. Choosing the right plants for these local conditions is the difference between a garden that thrives and one that struggles. Here are our go-to plants that reliably perform well in and around Leamington Spa.
Geranium 'Rozanne'. A perennial that flowers from June right through to October. Tough, low-maintenance, and that brilliant blue-violet colour makes it a garden staple. It spreads gently to fill gaps without being invasive, and copes well with the Midlands clay. We plant this in almost every garden we maintain.
Salvia nemorosa. Upright purple spikes beloved by bees. Thrives in sun and well-drained soil, drought-tolerant once established. Flowers June to August. The variety 'Caradonna' has particularly dark stems that look stunning against lighter planting. If your soil is very heavy clay, improve drainage with grit at planting time.
Astrantia. Perfect for shadier borders and clay soils — which makes it ideal for many Leamington Spa gardens. Delicate, intricate flowers in pink and white from June onwards. Very long-lived and incredibly reliable. The variety 'Roma' produces masses of dusky pink flowers and self-seeds gently for an increasingly natural look.
Rudbeckia (Black-eyed Susan). A late-season star — bright yellow daisies from August through October when most plants are fading. Very easy to grow and provides crucial colour in the garden at a time when everything else is winding down. The dried seedheads also look beautiful through winter.
Verbena bonariensis. Tall, airy, and brilliant for pollinators. Self-seeds freely and adds height and movement to any border. Half-hardy so may need replacing after hard winters, but in sheltered Leamington Spa gardens it often survives. Its transparency means you can plant it at the front of borders without blocking the view behind.
