Lawn treatment & scarification

Mowing alone won't fix a tired lawn. Scarifying, aerating, feeding and overseeding at the right times of year does — and the difference shows in weeks, not months.

The full lawn programme

Most lawns in Leamington Spa, Warwick and the surrounding villages share the same issues — a build-up of thatch and moss, compacted soil from years of footfall, and patchy bare spots where grass has thinned. Our seasonal treatment programme addresses all of it.

Scarification. The most transformative single thing you can do for an established lawn. We use a powered scarifier with spring-tine blades to rake out years of dead moss, thatch and matted grass — the stuff that's stopping water, air and feed reaching the roots. It's best done in spring (March–April) or autumn (September–October) when the grass is actively growing and can recover. The lawn looks worse for a week or two, then bounces back thicker and greener than before.

Hollow-tine aeration. Heavy clay soil and high foot-traffic compact the surface until water just sits on top. Hollow-tine aerators pull plugs of soil out of the lawn, leaving channels for air, water and feed to reach the root zone. Combined with a top-dressing of sharp sand, it dramatically improves drainage on heavy soil.

Moss control. Moss thrives in lawns that are damp, shaded or under-fed. We apply a ferrous-sulphate moss killer (turns it black within days), then scarify out the dead material. For a lasting result we follow up with a feed to thicken the grass so the moss can't muscle back in.

Feeding. Spring and autumn feeds make a visible difference within weeks — the grass turns deeper green, grows thicker and crowds out weeds. We use a granular slow-release feed appropriate to the season — high nitrogen in spring, lower nitrogen and higher potassium in autumn to harden the lawn off for winter.

Overseeding. Bare patches don't recover on their own — they're more likely to grow weeds than grass. We scratch up the surface, sow a hard-wearing rye-fescue mix and lightly top-dress with compost. With watering it'll germinate in 7–14 days.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to scarify a lawn?

Spring (March–April) and autumn (September–October) — when the grass is actively growing and can recover. We avoid scarifying in mid-summer or winter.

How soon will I see results from a treatment?

Feeding shows in 7–10 days as a deeper green. Scarification looks worse for 1–2 weeks before bouncing back thicker. Overseeding takes 14–21 days to germinate visibly.

Can I walk on the lawn after treatment?

Yes — once the feed is watered in (or after the next rain), normal use is fine. We'd ask you to keep heavy traffic off freshly overseeded patches for 3–4 weeks while they establish.

Does scarification work on a really weedy lawn?

It removes the moss and thatch but won't kill broadleaf weeds. For weedy lawns we'd recommend a selective weedkiller first, then scarify, then overseed the gaps — the full programme.

Will my lawn really come back from being patchy?

Yes, in almost every case. Most patchy lawns are compacted, moss-heavy or starved — fix those and the grass returns. We'll be honest if a lawn needs a full re-turf rather than treatment.
