Moss removal & lawn dethatching

If your lawn is more moss than grass, spongy underfoot or thinning year on year, the answer is the same: get the moss and thatch out and let the grass breathe. We do exactly that across Leamington Spa, Warwick and the surrounding villages.

Why moss and thatch ruin a lawn

A healthy lawn is dense, springy and green. A neglected one builds up a layer of thatch — dead grass, old clippings and moss — that mats together at soil level and stops water, air and feed reaching the roots. Add the damp Warwickshire climate and heavy clay soil common around Leamington Spa, and moss moves into every weak patch. Left alone, the moss spreads until it crowds the grass out entirely.

Mowing won't fix it. Feeding alone won't fix it. The only thing that genuinely revives a mossy, thatchy lawn is physically removing the build-up — moss treatment followed by dethatching (also called scarifying) — and then giving the grass the conditions to thicken back up.

How we do it

1. Moss treatment. We start by applying a ferrous-sulphate moss killer. It blackens the moss within a few days, killing it off so it rakes out cleanly rather than tearing up live grass with it.

2. Dethatching / scarification. Using a powered scarifier with spring-tine blades, we rake the dead moss and matted thatch out of the lawn. It pulls out a surprising amount — most customers can't believe how much was hiding in there. This is the step that lets the lawn breathe again.

3. Aeration (recommended). On compacted or clay soil we follow up with hollow-tine aeration, pulling small plugs of soil to open up drainage and stop the moss simply returning to a waterlogged surface.

4. Feed & overseed. A seasonal feed thickens the surviving grass so it crowds the moss out, and we overseed any bare patches with a hard-wearing rye-fescue mix. We rake up and take away all the moss and thatch — you're left with a clean, tidy lawn, not a pile of debris.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between dethatching and scarifying?

They're the same job described two ways. "Thatch" is the layer of dead grass, moss and debris that builds up at the base of the lawn; "dethatching" or "scarifying" is the process of raking it out with a powered scarifier so air, water and feed can reach the roots again.

When is the best time to remove moss and dethatch a lawn?

Spring (March–April) and early autumn (September–October) are ideal — the grass is growing strongly and recovers fastest. We treat the moss first, let it blacken, then scarify it out. We avoid dethatching in midsummer heat or midwinter when the lawn can't bounce back.

Why does my lawn have so much moss?

Moss takes over where grass is weak — usually from compacted or waterlogged soil, shade, scalping the lawn too short, or simply an underfed lawn. Removing the moss is only half the job; we fix the underlying cause with aeration and feeding so it doesn't just grow straight back.

Will my lawn look worse before it looks better?

Yes, briefly. Scarifying pulls out a surprising amount of material and the lawn looks thin for 1–2 weeks. Once it recovers — usually within a fortnight in the growing season — it comes back noticeably thicker and greener. Overseeding the bare patches speeds this up.

Do you take the moss and thatch away?

Yes. Every visit includes raking up and removing all the moss and thatch we pull out — you're left with a clean, tidy lawn, not piles of debris to deal with yourself.

How much does moss removal and dethatching cost?

From £45 for a typical back-garden lawn. We usually recommend pairing it with aeration and a feed for a lasting result — call 07904 174399 for a free quote based on your lawn size.
