Lawn scarifying

If your lawn feels spongy underfoot, looks thin, or moss keeps creeping in, it's almost always thatch. Scarifying rakes that build-up out and lets the grass breathe — the single most transformative thing you can do for an established lawn.

What scarifying actually does

Over time every lawn builds up a layer of thatch — dead grass, old clippings and moss that mats together right at soil level. A little is normal, but once it gets too thick it acts like a sponge, stopping water, air and feed from reaching the roots. The grass weakens, moss moves into the gaps, and the lawn slowly thins out.

Scarifying (sometimes called dethatching) fixes it. We use a powered scarifier fitted with spring-tine blades that cut down through the surface and rake the matted debris out. It pulls out a surprising amount — most customers can't believe how much was hiding in their lawn — and once it's gone the grass can finally breathe and thicken back up.

How we scarify your lawn

1. Assess & mow. We check the depth of thatch and mow the lawn a little shorter than usual so the scarifier can reach the base.

2. Powered scarification. We work the scarifier across the lawn (in two directions on heavily-thatched lawns) to rake out the dead grass, moss and matted thatch.

3. Collect & clear. We rake up and take away all the debris — you're left with a clean, tidy lawn, not piles of thatch to deal with yourself.

4. Feed & overseed (recommended). Scarifying opens the lawn up perfectly for overseeding bare patches and a feed to thicken the grass — so it recovers faster and crowds moss out for good.

What's included

Pricing: Lawn scarifying starts from £45 for a typical back-garden lawn. For the best long-term result we usually recommend adding aeration and a feed — ask about the full lawn-renovation package. Larger lawns priced on size. Call 07904 174399 for a free, no-obligation quote.

Scarifying is also part of our wider lawn treatment programme, and if your lawn is mostly moss we'd suggest our moss removal & dethatching service, which treats the moss first. For regular upkeep, see lawn mowing & edging or browse all our gardening services.

Frequently asked questions

What is lawn scarifying?

Scarifying is the process of mechanically raking out the layer of dead grass, moss and thatch that builds up at the base of a lawn. A powered scarifier with spring-tine blades cuts through the surface and pulls the debris out, letting air, water and feed reach the roots again so the grass can thicken up.

When should a lawn be scarified?

Spring (March–April) and early autumn (September–October) are best, when the grass is growing strongly and recovers quickly. We avoid scarifying in midsummer heat or in winter when the lawn can't bounce back.

Is scarifying the same as dethatching?

Yes — they're two words for the same job. "Thatch" is the matted layer of dead material at soil level, and scarifying (or dethatching) is the process of raking it out. If your lawn is heavy with moss specifically, see our moss removal & dethatching service, which adds a moss treatment first.

How often should I scarify my lawn?

Most lawns benefit from a light scarify once a year, usually in autumn. Lawns with heavy thatch or moss build-up may need it twice — once in spring and once in autumn — until the problem is under control.

Will scarifying damage my lawn?

It looks dramatic at first — scarifying pulls out a lot of material and the lawn can look thin for a week or two. But it's not damage; it's the opposite. Once it recovers in the growing season the grass comes back noticeably thicker and greener. Overseeding the bare patches afterwards speeds it up.

How much does lawn scarifying cost?

From £45 for a typical back-garden lawn. We usually recommend pairing scarifying with aeration and a feed for the best long-term result — call 07904 174399 for a free quote based on your lawn size.
